rocket_launch Getting Started
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile data plan without needing a physical SIM card. It's built into your device and can be programmed with different carrier profiles. With Global Starlink eSIMs, you simply scan a QR code or use our app to get connected instantly when traveling abroad.
An eSIM works by storing your mobile plan digitally on your device's built-in chip. After purchasing, you'll receive a QR code via email. Simply scan it with your phone's camera, and the eSIM profile will be downloaded and installed. Once you arrive at your destination, enable the eSIM data plan in your settings and you'll be connected to a local network.
Most modern smartphones support eSIM, including:
  • iPhone: iPhone XS and later models (including iPhone 14 and above which are eSIM-only in the US)
  • Samsung: Galaxy S20 and later, Galaxy Z Flip/Fold series
  • Google Pixel: Pixel 3a and later
  • Other: Huawei P40+, Motorola Razr, Oppo Find X3 Pro, and more
Check our eSIM Compatibility List for the full list of supported devices. Make sure your device is carrier-unlocked for the eSIM to work properly.
Yes, your device must be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM. If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, you'll need to contact them to request an unlock before you can install an eSIM from a different provider. Most phones purchased outright or those past their contract period can be unlocked for free.
The key differences are:
  • Convenience: eSIMs are digital and install instantly via QR code. No need to swap physical cards.
  • Dual SIM: Most eSIM devices let you keep your home SIM active alongside the travel eSIM.
  • No shipping: eSIMs are delivered electronically, so there's no waiting for delivery.
  • Environment: eSIMs reduce plastic waste from physical SIM cards and packaging.
Physical SIMs may still be preferred for older devices or in some countries where eSIM support is limited.
phone_iphone eSIM Setup
Installing your eSIM is simple and takes just a few minutes:
  • Step 1: Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Step 2: Open the QR code we sent to your email.
  • Step 3: Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile > Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan).
  • Step 4: Scan the QR code with your phone's camera.
  • Step 5: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation.
We recommend installing your eSIM before you travel, then activating data when you arrive. Check our How it Works page for detailed step-by-step guides with screenshots.
Yes, and we strongly recommend it! You can install your eSIM profile as soon as you receive the QR code. The data plan won't start counting until you activate it at your destination (for most plans). This way, you'll be ready to connect the moment you land.
Absolutely! One of the biggest advantages of eSIM is dual-SIM capability. You can keep your home SIM card (physical) for calls and texts while using the eSIM for data abroad. Just make sure to set your travel eSIM as the primary data line and your home SIM for calls/SMS in your device settings.
Most eSIM profiles can only be installed once and cannot be transferred to another device. If you delete the eSIM from your phone, you may not be able to reinstall it using the same QR code. If you need to move your eSIM to a new device, please contact our support team and we'll help you with a replacement.
The activation timing depends on the specific plan:
  • Most plans: Data starts when you first connect to a network at your destination.
  • Some plans: Data starts from the date of installation or purchase.
The activation details are clearly stated on each product page. We recommend checking the specific plan details before purchasing to understand when your validity period begins.

build Troubleshooting
If you're experiencing connectivity issues, try these steps:
  • 1. Make sure the eSIM line is enabled and set as the primary data line in Settings.
  • 2. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off.
  • 3. Ensure Data Roaming is turned ON for the eSIM line.
  • 4. Restart your device.
  • 5. Try manually selecting a network: Settings > Cellular > Network Selection > Manual.
If the issue persists, contact our support team via Live Chat for immediate assistance.
Resetting network settings can resolve many connectivity issues:
  • iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • Android: Go to Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Important: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, but your eSIM profile will remain installed. You'll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks afterward.
If your QR code won't scan, try these solutions:
  • Open the QR code on another device (computer or tablet) and scan it with your phone.
  • Increase screen brightness on the device displaying the QR code.
  • Make sure you're scanning through Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, not through a regular camera app.
  • If the QR code is in an email, try zooming in or downloading the image first.
You can also try manually entering the activation details provided in your email instead of scanning.
Slow data speeds can be caused by several factors:
  • Check if you've exceeded your data allowance (throttled speeds may apply).
  • Try switching between available networks manually.
  • Move to an area with better coverage (indoor areas or remote locations may have weaker signal).
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on and off to refresh your connection.
  • Check if your APN settings are correct (details in your setup email).
If speeds remain consistently slow, contact us for assistance.
